Celebrating Roatan’s Garifuna
April is a fun month in Roatan!
April 12th marks the anniversary of the Garifuna arriving on Roatan back in 1797. After an unsuccessful war against European colonists on the islands of St. Vincent, approximately 5,000 Black Caribs (who are now called Garifuna) were forcibly deported to the island of Roatan. Upon landing here, many opted to stay and establish a new community called Punta Gorda. The rest of the Black Caribs continued on to the mainland of Honduras, establishing another community in Trujillo. From there, communities spread through to Guatemala, Belize, and Nicaragua, and there are now large Garifuna communities in several U.S. cities, too.
Each year on April 12th, Punta Gorda comes alive with celebrations filled with dancing, singing, eating, and drinking. Learn a bit more about this incredible community, and share in their joyous celebration.
