Though any time of year is a great time to visit Roatan, if you are interested in visiting over the upcoming months and have any questions about travel or would like more information on a specific vacation home, please feel free to contact us and discuss details with our team. We hope to hear from you soon.

Beautiful Property
Private pool was fantastic. Used the kayaks a lot to snorkel out by the break. Great snorkeling! Location is perfect. Short scooter ride to the Eldon’s grocery store, the West End, and West Bay. Property is very quiet. Beach feels like a personal private beach. We really enjoyed our stay.

Invasive Lionfish
Join the Hunt
Known for their show-stopping appearance, venomous spines, and damage to local reefs, invasive lionfish are the first non-native marine fish to become established in the Atlantic. Lionfish pose a significant threat to local marine ecosystems due to widespread predation of native species, prolific reproduction, and lack of controlling predators. However, here in the Bay Islands, the Roatan Marine Park have taken a proactive stance in removing this harmful species, teaching snorkelers and divers to spear this invasive fish legally and safely.
Twice a week on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, workshops are held at the RMP store in Half Moon Bay, West End, where interested hunters receive a briefing and are taught how to use a Hawaiian sling. The workshop costs $70.00 a person and includes the spear, a 2-year license and the current RMP bracelet or token. To signup and begin removing this voracious pest, please visit:
https://www.roatanmarinepark.org/lionfish-calendar
While hunting lionfish is enjoyable in itself, the meat is also delicious, being a dense, white flesh that can be used in a variety of dishes. Here on Roatan, several restaurants have lionfish on their menu whenever available including Gingers and Cannibal Café in West End. The fins can also be used as jewelry and there are a handful of creative people who make earing, necklaces, bracelets, rings and key chains which are available at the RMP store, Rusty fish and at the local monthly markets held at the Brewery.
While lionfish have been extremely damaging to marine life in the Caribbean, they are fun to hunt, delicious to eat, and make great jewelry. Get licensed, join in the hunt and help remove these invasive fish.

Stranded in Roatan
While enjoying the beaches and amenities of modern Roatan, it is hard to imagine what it may have been like before it was settled, but a man named Philip Ashton lived for almost a year on the island when it was virtually uninhabited.
Ashton was a Massachusetts native fishing with a crew off the coast of Nova Scotia when their boat was captured by pirate Ned Low. Ashton was then forced to accompany the pirates east to Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa and then west to the Caribbean. At Roatan the pirate ship stopped to take on water and Ashton volunteered to go ashore with a small crew. He saw his opportunity to escape and hid in the bush until the pirate crew gave up the search. Ashton was now free, but was also without shoes or any sort of weapon.
Forced to fend for himself, he began watching the wild pigs on the island, getting a clue as to what might be safely eaten, since he had no hook for fishing nor spear for hunting. He subsisted on what fruits he could find. It is an interesting fact that he found Maumee apples and hog plums, but no mangoes, a fruit that is nowadays common on the island, but evidently not available in 1722-23. Also intriguing is the fact that by this time the indigenous Paya Indians had disappeared – either removed from the islands or killed off by disease or conquest.
After a couple of close encounters, Ashton was rescued and returned to Massachusetts. You can read the whole adventure, in an edition annotated for the modern reader below.
